Description

The Venn 5028 HE1 pairs our 50mm deep, 28mm wide 5028 TCD SL rims with the Venn Helix-01 hub, whose helical drive pulls the ratchet rings together under power: 72 teeth, no free play when you push. Laced with Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes, 24 front and rear, the set weighs 1380g and takes 35 to 50mm tyres, for fast road and gravel on one wheelset. The rims carry no clear coat: gloss, matte or 25k filament wound.

HELICAL ENGAGEMENT

In an ordinary ratchet hub, springs push the drive rings together and a little play stays between the teeth. In the Venn Helix-01 the drive torque itself pulls the two 72-tooth ratchet rings together along a helical spline: the harder you pedal, the more firmly they mesh. It engages within 5 degrees, and under power there is no free play to take up, out of the saddle, in a sprint or on a steep climb.

ROLLING UNDER LOAD

Beside its two 6902 bearings, the rear hub runs a 41.5mm nano-coated angular contact bearing. It takes side loads as well as radial ones, so it keeps its alignment under the weight of a rider and the force of a sprint, and the wheel keeps rolling freely when it matters. Cold-forged shell, 15mm 7075-T6 aluminium axle, forged and CNC-machined SCM 415 steel ratchets.

WIDE ENOUGH FOR GRAVEL, DEEP ENOUGH FOR THE ROAD

At 36mm across its widest point the 5028 rim carries a wide tyre cleanly, and the 28mm internal bed lets you run it at low pressure for grip and comfort on loose ground. Fifty millimetres of depth keeps it quick on tarmac. The hooked bead takes tubeless and clincher tyres alike, so one wheelset covers the road ride and the gravel race.

Sapim CX-Ray Spokes

The benchmark bladed steel spoke on race wheels: light, aerodynamic and strong, and any bike shop in the world can true the wheel or replace a spoke. 24 spokes front and rear for a stiff, durable wheel.

50mm deep, 28mm wide inside and 36mm outside (33.5mm at the bead): sized for 35 to 50mm tyres. The Venn 5028 TCD SL rim weighs about 380g and carries no clear coat.

Questions riders ask

What does helical engagement do?

In an ordinary ratchet hub, springs alone hold the rings in engagement and a little play remains between the teeth. In the Helix-01 the drive torque pulls the two ratchet rings together along a helical spline, so the more torque you put through it, the more firmly it engages. Under power there is no free play.

How heavy are the hubs?

The Helix-01 front hub weighs 105g and the rear 243g, and both are included in the 1380g wheelset weight. Hub weight sits close to the axle, so it barely changes how the wheel accelerates.

Which freehubs and axles fit?

Shimano HG (for Shimano 11 and 12-speed road cassettes) or SRAM XDR. Axles are 12 x 100mm front and 12 x 142mm rear thru axle, with Center Lock rotors. There is no Campagnolo freehub for the Helix-01.

Which tyres work best?

The 28mm internal width is made for 35 to 50mm tyres, from fast road tyres on rough tarmac to gravel race tyres, tubeless or with inner tubes. Tubeless tape is included.

Which 5028 build should I choose?

All three use the same 5028 TCD SL rim. The 5028 S runs Sapim CX-Ray steel spokes on ratchet hubs with sealed steel bearings, for 1270g. The 5028 C SL saves 80g with carbon aero blade spokes and S&S ceramic bearings, for 1190g. The 5028 HE1 runs Venn's own Helix-01 hubs with 72-tooth helical engagement, for 1380g. Take the S for value and steel spokes any shop can service, the C SL for the lightest set, and the HE1 for instant engagement under power.

Each set is built to order around its Helix-01 hubs and ships 5 to 8 weeks after payment, free worldwide.
