A 24mm deep rim is a shallow rim by design. There is no aerodynamic case for depth on a cross-country wheel that spends its day at trail speeds, and a shallower wall lets the rim flex a little under square-edged hits instead of transmitting all of it into the tire and the rider. Combined with the 30mm internal bed, the profile is hookless throughout: the bead seat carries the tire without a hook lip, which removes the thin, vulnerable feature at the rim edge and lets the sidewall be laid up thicker where impacts actually land. Run tubeless tires rated for hookless rims and observe the tire manufacturer's hookless pressure ceiling.

Our road wheelsets use carbon aero blade spokes, because on tarmac the priorities are near-zero elongation and a narrow profile through the air. A mountain wheel is a different problem. Impacts arrive suddenly, from angles a road wheel never sees, and the wheel needs to absorb them without a brittle failure mode. Pillar PSR 1420 is a stainless bladed spoke that stretches slightly under a hit and returns, taking energy out of the impact before it reaches the rim. It is also field-serviceable in a way a proprietary spoke is not, which matters a great deal when you are a long way from home.

The 2430 rims are moulded from an optimised layup that uses genuine Torayca T700, T800 and T1100 prepreg, the same material family and the same approach we use on the Venn 500 rims. Different grades of fibre do different jobs: the higher-modulus material goes where stiffness per gram pays, and the tougher, higher-elongation material goes into the impact zones where the wheel takes its hits. Using named prepreg from a single supplier means the material properties are known quantities rather than an unverifiable claim, and the layup is designed around those numbers instead of around a target price.

The two 2430 wheelsets share a rim mould, a 30mm internal bed, the same Pillar PSR 1420 spokes at 28/28, and the same Boost hubs. What differs is the layup and what it is rated to absorb. The XC is rated to 100 J and weighs 1190g. The AM is rated to 125 J and weighs 1290g. That 100g is additional material placed where the rim takes impacts, and the impact rating is the honest expression of what it buys. Choose the XC if your riding is decided by how the bike climbs and accelerates: cross-country racing, marathon, down-country, and trails where you pick a clean line. Choose the AM if your riding involves sustained descending, rocks you cannot always avoid, and the kind of terrain where a wheel earns its rating. Neither is a compromised version of the other; they are rated for different jobs.

Cross-country and down-country riders who care how a bike climbs and accelerates, and who ride trails where they can generally choose a clean line. At 1190g it is light enough that you feel it on every rise, and the 100 J rim rating covers the impacts that riding produces. If your days are decided on long descents through rock gardens, the 2430 SL AM is rated for that instead.

The wheelset weighs 1190g +/- 30g. The tolerance is quoted for the pair, since we publish system weight rather than a single rim figure. That is a genuinely light figure for a 29" wheelset with a 30mm internal bed and 28 stainless spokes in each wheel.

It is the impact energy the rim is validated to absorb in our test programme, measured in joules. It gives you a number to compare against rather than a marketing adjective. The 2430 SL XC is rated to 100 J; the 2430 SL AM, which uses more material in the impact zones, is rated to 125 J. Higher is tougher, and in exchange it is heavier.

Because a mountain wheel and a road wheel solve different problems. Carbon spokes are excellent on tarmac, where near-zero elongation and a narrow aero profile are what matter. Off-road, a spoke that yields slightly under a sudden impact and returns takes energy out of that impact before the rim has to deal with all of it. Pillar PSR 1420 stainless bladed spokes also have the practical advantage of being replaceable anywhere, by any shop.

The 30mm internal bed is designed around 2.25in to 2.4in tires, which is where most current cross-country and down-country casings sit. Narrower than 2.25in and the tire starts to be stretched flatter than its designer intended; wider than 2.4in and the casing begins to overhang the rim's support. Within that range the tire sits at close to its moulded section, with square tread blocks and predictable cornering.

Yes, the 2430 rim bed is hookless. Use tubeless tires that the tire manufacturer explicitly approves for hookless rims, and stay at or below the hookless pressure ceiling they publish. In practice this is not a limitation for mountain riding, since trail pressures sit far below any hookless ceiling. Hookless lets us remove the thin hook lip at the rim edge and put that material where impacts actually land.

The 2430 SL XC is built exclusively to Boost spacing: 15x110mm at the front and 12x148mm at the rear. The rear hub accepts a Shimano HG, SRAM XD or Shimano Micro Spline freehub body, chosen at checkout. There is no non-Boost build, because the wide rim and large tire are what Boost bracing angles exist to support.
