Description

The Venn 2430 SL AM is an all-mountain wheelset built on a 24mm deep hookless carbon rim with a 30mm internal bed, laced 28 front and 28 rear with Pillar PSR 1420 stainless bladed spokes onto Boost hubs. The rim is moulded from an optimised layup of genuine Torayca T700, T800 and T1100 prepreg, with additional material through the impact zones that takes it to a 125 joule rating, for a system weight of 1290g. The 30mm internal width sets a 2.3in to 2.5in tire at its full section for the traction that steep, loose terrain demands. Built for riders who descend hard and would rather not think about their wheels while doing it.

RATED TO 125 JOULES

The AM layup exists for one reason: to absorb impacts the trail delivers whether or not you chose them. It carries additional Torayca material through the rim's impact zones, and the result is validated at 125 joules rather than 100. That is a number rather than an adjective, which is the point. It costs 100 grams over the XC layup, and those hundred grams sit exactly where a rock strike lands. On terrain where you cannot always pick a clean line, that is the trade worth making.

02

THIRTY MILLIMETRES, MEASURED INSIDE

Internal width decides how a tire actually sits, and 30mm holds a 2.3in to 2.5in casing at close to its moulded section rather than pinching it narrow. That squares off the tread so the side knobs bite when the bike is leaned over, and it supports the sidewall well enough to run the low pressures that steep, loose ground rewards. The 36mm external dimension carries the tire shoulder out cleanly, without a ledge for a rock to catch, and the hookless bed puts material at the rim edge where impacts arrive instead of into a thin hook lip.

03

TWENTY-EIGHT STAINLESS SPOKES

Pillar PSR 1420 stainless bladed spokes, 28 in each wheel. Steel is the right material here because it yields slightly under a sudden impact and comes back, taking energy out of a hit before the rim has to absorb all of it. Twenty-eight spokes spread trail loads and braking torque across enough attachment points that none of them carries an outsized share, which is what keeps a wheel in tune through a season of descending. They are also replaceable by any shop, anywhere, which matters more the further from home you ride.

In depth

The 125 J Layup

The AM and the XC come out of the same rim mould, so the profile, the 30mm internal bed and the 36mm external width are identical. The difference is inside the wall. The AM carries additional Torayca prepreg through the zones where a rim takes impacts, laid up to a schedule validated at 125 joules against the XC's 100. Publishing both numbers is deliberate: an impact rating is measurable and comparable, where terms like 'enduro-ready' are not. The extra material costs 100 grams, and it is placed rather than spread.

Rim Profile and Tire Fit

A 24mm deep rim is shallow on purpose. Depth buys nothing aerodynamically at trail speeds, and a shallower wall lets the rim flex slightly under square-edged hits rather than transmitting all of that energy onward. The bed is hookless throughout, which removes the thin hook lip at the rim edge and allows the sidewall to be laid up thicker exactly where impacts land. Run tubeless tires that the tire manufacturer approves for hookless rims, and observe their published hookless pressure ceiling — for all-mountain pressures this is never the binding constraint.

Why Steel Spokes on a Mountain Wheel

Our road wheelsets use carbon aero blade spokes, because tarmac rewards near-zero elongation and a narrow profile through the air. Off-road the problem changes. Impacts arrive suddenly and from angles a road wheel never sees, and what the wheel needs is a spoke that gives a little and returns rather than one optimised for stiffness alone. Pillar PSR 1420 is a stainless bladed spoke that does that, and it is field-serviceable in a way proprietary spokes are not.

The Torayca Layup

The 2430 rims use an optimised layup of genuine Torayca T700, T800 and T1100 prepreg, the same material family and approach as the Venn 500 road rims. Different fibre grades do different jobs: higher-modulus material where stiffness per gram pays, tougher higher-elongation material through the impact zones. Naming the prepreg matters because it makes the material properties a known quantity rather than an unverifiable claim, and it means the layup is engineered around real numbers instead of a target cost.

Choosing Between the AM and the XC

Both 2430 wheelsets share a rim mould, a 30mm internal bed, the same Pillar PSR 1420 spokes at 28/28, and the same Boost hubs. What differs is the layup and its rating. The AM is rated to 125 J and weighs 1290g; the XC is rated to 100 J and weighs 1190g. The 100g between them is material placed where the rim takes hits. Choose the AM if your riding involves sustained descending, rock you cannot always avoid, and terrain that tests a wheel rather than a rider's fitness. Choose the XC if your days are decided by climbing and acceleration and you can generally pick a clean line. Neither is a lesser build; they are rated for different work.

Questions riders ask

What kind of rider is the Venn 2430 SL AM for?

All-mountain and enduro riders who descend hard on terrain where a clean line is not always available. The 125 J rim rating is the reason to choose it: it is validated to absorb more impact energy than the XC layup, at a cost of 100 grams. If your riding is decided on climbs and you pick your lines, the 2430 SL XC is the lighter answer to that question.

How much does the Venn 2430 SL AM weigh?

The wheelset weighs 1290g +/- 30g, quoted for the pair rather than as a single rim figure. For a 29" all-mountain wheelset with a 30mm internal bed, 28 stainless spokes per wheel and a 125 J rim, that is a light figure rather than a heavy one.

What does the 125 J impact rating mean?

It is the impact energy the rim is validated to absorb in our test programme, in joules. The AM is rated to 125 J and the XC to 100 J. We publish both because an impact rating is measurable and comparable in a way that words like 'enduro-ready' are not. Higher is tougher, and it costs weight.

Is the AM just a heavier version of the XC?

No — the extra material is placed, not spread. Both rims come from the same mould with the same 24mm depth, 30mm internal and 36mm external dimensions, and both are laced 28/28 with the same spokes onto the same hubs. The AM carries additional Torayca prepreg through the zones where a rim actually takes impacts, which is what raises the validated rating from 100 J to 125 J. The 100 gram difference is concentrated where it does work.

What tire width should I run?

The 30mm internal bed suits 2.3in to 2.5in tires for all-mountain use, holding the casing at close to its moulded section so the tread stays square and the sidewall is properly supported at low pressure. It will run narrower or wider than that, but within this range the tire behaves as its designer intended.

Are these rims hookless, and what does that mean for tires?

Yes, the bed is hookless. Use tubeless tires explicitly approved by the tire manufacturer for hookless rims and stay within their published hookless pressure ceiling. All-mountain pressures sit far below that ceiling, so in practice it does not constrain you. Going hookless lets us delete the thin hook lip at the rim edge and put that material where impacts land.

Which freehub and axle options are available?

The 2430 SL AM is built exclusively to Boost spacing: 15x110mm front and 12x148mm rear. The rear hub takes a Shimano HG, SRAM XD or Shimano Micro Spline freehub body, selected at checkout. There is no non-Boost option, because the wide rim and large tire are exactly what Boost bracing angles exist to support.

Are the 2430 SL AM wheels tubeless-ready?

Yes. They are tubeless-ready and ship with tubeless tape and valves. On a hookless mountain rim tubeless is the intended setup, and the 30mm internal bed seats a modern tubeless casing securely.

What warranty do these wheels carry?

All Venn products come with a 5-year manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, with no registration required for purchases made on vennwheels.com. Shipping is included in the price, worldwide.
